Regenerating the Small Farmer
Long ago, being a small farmer was much easier and more desirable in life, but not so much now. In most African countries, if not the world over, interest in farming as an occupation is shrinking. Opportunities in cities are becoming more and more appealing, and often more lucrative than running a farm.
If we don’t make major changes to the way we care for our Earth, educate our smaller farmers and create more economies for them, big farming operations will continue to erode topsoil, use massive amounts of water, drying up our sources. Consequently, it’s going to be very difficult to grow food on this planet. How will we keep producing that chunk of the world’s food while creating an honest livelihood for those who grow it? How will we keep this food healthy and nourishing to our communities?
Rural communities, the lifeblood that sustains agricultural livelihoods, are shrinking. People are leaving the rural communities in vast numbers in most countries, even if farming has been part of the family for generations in favor of a more ‘modern’ city life, and often because they must in order to survive financially.
We are witnessing less government support; government support has shifted more towards lucrative commodity farms in recent decades, most often those producing ingredients for junk food or for feeding animals in horrific factory farm conditions. This has left our important, deserving, and overlooked small farmers in the dust, and the health of our communities and our planet in need and at risk.
We know what we need to do, right here and now, to sequester carbon, help to reverse climate change, replenish and remineralize our topsoil, and to heal our bodies and our world at the same time.
We are introducing the SEEDS global regeneration movement, powered by the Telos blockchain network, for a fresh economic ecosystem focused on creating opportunities for those with the vision of supporting and expanding this shared global network. The SEEDS global passport is supporting local farmers by giving Seeds grants to those who are doing good for the environment. What it means by being part of this regenerative movement is that we are encouraging people to support local farmers by buying directly from them as much as possible, through as farmer’s markets etc. By sourcing organic food at the local level, we are not only fostering vibrant health with potent nutrient-dense foods, but also promoting the most vulnerable farmers among us: rural small family farms and cooperatives.
