As I prepared for the first session of the Renaissance Explorers, I thought about a primary reason for this whole experiment and what I’m doing here (the other being, creating a more beautiful civilization to grow old in). It is to create new economic and coordination systems that can address the systemic crises causing our Earth’s ecosystems to collapse. For those unaware of these planetary “tipping points” and feedback loops there’s been a recent Netflix show with David Attenborough, so beautifully made and absolutely recommend! Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet
These crises, are destroying life on our earth to extinction. It’s the dominant economic systems that are driving this suicidal and ecocidal behavior, and over the last many decades nation states have proven inept at taking the action required. Their self-preservation requires the preservation of the current Economic paradigms, so changing them as much as is necessary to preserve life, is out of bounds. So far, none of the popular Cryptocurrencies even attempt to address these crises. No Economic system is viable if it doesn’t address the living conditions of our planet. Money is useless on an inhospitable planet. If we want to address this, we need new economic paradigms. Which means we need new financial, governance and organisational systems to change how we coordinate at scale.
That’s what we’re building, testing and experimenting with here. We’re also using these tools to organize our own organism. However, a broader use is for the DHO to be used by regions to organise regional Regeneration and the creation of new economies. So, as we go into rethinking our governance system here, let’s keep this in mind as we design tools that work for both Organisations and regions.
There’s an abundance of wisdom from the modern scientific and ancient scientific (indigenous) communities on how we can build systemic alternatives. Yet, their recommendations fall on the deaf ears of politicians. SEEDS and Hypha can serve as a foundation for applying this wisdom at scale, and giving people alternative Economic realities to opt into. Let’s build foundations open enough to accept and integrate this wisdom as we mature. Before, when I watched movies like the Breaking Boundaries, all I felt was dread; as I felt there was nothing I could do. Maybe I’d go to the streets and yell in protest (did that often). Yet, that proved useless. What we’re doing here is building alternatives so that instead of just protesting – people can opt-into new systems. WE can opt into new systems. Occasionally I get lost in the weeds of our day-to-day that I forget about the bigger picture of why we’re creating these tools and thought this may be a welcomed reminder for you Renaissance Explorers as it was for me
