“The Grass is Always Greener”

For me, even though I’ve heard the statement “the grass is always greener on the other side,” countless times, it was kind of hard to conquer the concept before I fully understood it. So here, we dive deeper into the statement itself and explore necessary tools to help you utilize your current life circumstances in order to cultivate what you want, without the surface level of others’ lives playing a major role in how you view what you have. So, at some point in your life, you’ve probably heard and/or experienced the saying “The grass is always greener on the other side.” What this saying means is that having nice, plentiful, green grass – in relation to current life circumstances, are desired. The color green, when talking about nature, is considered a form of thriving, so if someone is to have “green grass,” is to also say that their life is thriving, and thus, most likely desirable. And since most of us want to have a life that appears nice to others, we usually seek having the greenest grass that we think we can realistically have. But the thing about the saying is, is that no matter where you are or how green your grass may seem, the grass of others will always look greener – no matter how good certain aspects of your life may be to you, the lives of others will always appear more desirable. And if you go chase after and acquire those same desired circumstances of others that you once wanted, when you look back at your old lawn, it looks greener than what you have now, even though it didn’t before. This is really one hell of an illusion, so let’s get ready to walk on our so called grass barefoot. Get ready to look at and re-experience this idea like never before.
First thing’s first, let’s back up for a minute and begin with a truly worst case scenario here and say that EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THIS WORLD has “greener grass” than you. You have the most unappealing grass out of everyone – accept it.
So, even though EVERYONE has greener grass than you, green is just one color. We’re all under the same blue sky and nearly the exact same weather as people in our vicinity: regardless of grass, there is more to the picture and we actually all share a lot of the same characteristics. We’re all under the same night stars and thus under the same star light. And guess what. Even if you have the greenest grass out of everyone, when it becomes nighttime, the human eye cannot distinguish color. Everything that shines different colors in the day is simply different shades of black and white at night, to the human eye. So pretty much every single lawn looks the exact same in the night, which stands true to our lives being similar as we sleep at night, which puts even kings on their backs, as it does everyone else, staring up at the sky.
Now going back to you having the least green grass; yes everyone else may have greener grass than you, but it would then be guaranteed that some of that green grass would be unkept. Things might get overgrown, and that may attract and allow certain weeds to flourish or bring about undesired animals (like skunks let’s say) – because someone has this “greener grass,” it also may bring about things like people trying to mess up the lawn by littering in it for example, which may dampen the unrealistic appeal of that person’s lawn.
And while we’re primarily focusing on the color green here, which is just one small aspect of our visual sense, we’re not even taking into account that there are four other senses we experience things through. Perhaps your yard smells better, maybe you have a lot of sand in your yard and you like how sand feels better than grass (one person’s trash is another’s treasure). Just because you have the least green grass doesn’t mean you don’t have the world’s coolest wind chimes, or the most state-of-the-art bird feeders, coldest ice sculpture, or coolest swingset, which all establish a beautiful environment regardless of grass. You have a plentiful supply of unique things in your life and a different purpose than others, so don’t let the value of your landscape be determined by your perspective of how others prefer theirs.
Also, with the color green being just one small part of the spectrum, so is the grass. Someone could easily have greener grass than you, but maybe their house is being foreclosed. We can easily see what’s on the outside, what’s usually hidden from us is what’s on the inside, which is what really matters. Also, even seeing what’s on the outside really isn’t even worth believing, as this “grass” we have been talking about all this time is most likely just fake (man-made sod), so its color green isn’t even natural or itself, instead it’s an illusion. And the people that are so worried about green grass with a lot of money without a care for the rest of the picture are the ones that go and get astroturf. Oh yes it’s green indeed, but extremely synthetic and unpleasant to walk on barefoot, where you can really connect with grass. This is relatable to how we see people with the best looking social media accounts, while their real lives are in shambles, or if someone looks good on tv, but has a really unenjoyable personality.
This one time, my friend took my other friend’s spot on the couch, which was also the last spot on the couch. When he said “Oh crap, sorry I just took your spot, would you like it back?” My other friend replied something like “No thanks! This carpet looks extremely comfortable.” It looked rather unappealing and uncomfortable to me, but when my friend enthusiastically sat down and genuinely enjoyed himself in a very unique way, it made every person sitting on a couch want to be sitting on the carpet. You can either see it how you think it is, or make something entirely new or improved. The cooler it is in your imagination, the cooler it is in real life. Put the flag up on ya maaailbox; send someone a letter.
